Pasteur Institute

The Pasteur Institute is a cluster of red brick buildings and iron gates near the Place de Breteuil. Louis Pasteur founded this research center in eighteen eighty-eight using donations from around the world. He wanted a place where scientists could study infectious diseases away from the constraints of hospital wards. When the rabies vaccine proved successful, Pasteur moved his laboratory here. He is buried in a private chapel in the building basement, decorated with elaborate mosaics that depict his scientific breakthroughs.
