The rotunda of La Ruche stands out in the fifteenth arrondissement like a leftover piece of a world fair. It is a three-story circular building with a copper roof, originally constructed by Gustave Eiffel as a wine rotunda for the nineteen hundred Exposition Universelle. After the fair, the sculptor Alfred Boucher bought the structure, dismantled it, and moved it here to provide cheap studios for struggling immigrant artists. Marc Chagall and Fernand Leger once painted in these cramped, unheated rooms.
