The facade of Notre-Dame-du-Travail hides a raw iron skeleton beneath its traditional stone exterior. Built in nineteen oh two, the church replaced an older, cramped parish chapel for the laborers who flooded into this district for the Universal Exposition. Its architect, Jules Astruc, left the structural steel exposed inside the nave, a deliberate choice to honor the physical labor of the local working-class community. The metal ribs curve overhead like the hull of a ship, framing the entire worship space.
