The old seminary of Saint-Sulpice sits behind a high stone wall, marked by a seventeenth-century gatehouse with two rounded towers. This building served as a quiet retreat for students of the Saint-Sulpice order, who escaped the noise of Paris to study and pray among these gardens. During the French Revolution, the seminary held a more dangerous purpose. In seventeen ninety-two, dozens of priests refused to take a new state oath, and their imprisonment here led to a bloody massacre in the courtyard.
