Fort d'Issy wears a coat of modern, angular apartment blocks where stone ramparts once stood. Built in the eighteen forties to defend Paris, it saw its bloodiest day in eighteen seventy-one. During the Paris Commune, government forces pounded the fort with heavy artillery from the heights of Meudon. The structure crumbled, and the French army finally seized it after a relentless bombardment. Today, those scarred, historic walls remain tucked behind residential balconies, framing a neighborhood defined by that violent siege.
