Parc de l'abbé Derry

The Parc de l'abbé Derry features a tall, slender stone obelisk set against the low greenery of the surrounding park. It commemorates Joseph Derry, a parish priest who refused to surrender his church bells to the German occupation forces during the Second World War. When the Nazis demanded the bronze for the war effort, Derry hid them in his cellar. He was deported to a concentration camp, where he died in nineteen forty-four. The monument marks his stubborn defiance of the local authorities.
