Île Saint-Germain Park

park garden

The Tour aux Figures stands in the center of the park as a white, spiraling tower covered in colorful, surreal paintings. Jean Dubuffet designed this concrete structure to house an internal maze he called the gastro-tubes, where visitors crawl through winding, organic passages. It represents his desire to break architecture away from straight lines and standard utility. Construction finished in nineteen eighty-eight, three years after the artist died, leaving the massive sculpture to loom over the landscape as a permanent, puzzle-like retreat.
