The Ile Saint-Germain you see today is a dramatic transformation from its former life as an industrial and military site. For decades, this land was a restricted area dominated by factories and military camps, but in the early nineteen eighties, city planners began a massive project to turn it into a public park. They demolished thirty-five industrial buildings and brought in thousands of cubic meters of fresh soil to nourish the land, effectively reclaiming this stretch of the Seine for the public.
