Pierre Grenier Cemetery

historic

When this cemetery opened in eighteen eighty-nine, it earned a mocking nickname among locals. They called it the aquatic cemetery because its proximity to the Seine caused the grounds to flood whenever the river rose. The site was established because the older cemetery in town had become completely full, forcing the city to expand onto this lower-lying land near the water. Today, the area is shielded by hundreds of mature plane trees, creating a dense canopy that hides the history of those earlier, sodden years.
