Auteuil Cemetery

Auteuil Cemetery is a small, walled plot tucked behind the neighborhood church, distinguished by its dense, vertical arrangement of graves and heavy iron gates. It began as the parish burial ground in the nineteenth century, serving a quiet village before Paris expanded to swallow it whole. The painter Paul Gavarni rests here, though he is overshadowed by a more recent addition. In two thousand two, the author Hubert Selby Junior was buried in this cramped space, far from his Brooklyn roots.
