Roland Garros Stadium

The red clay courts of Roland Garros sit encased in a modern complex of steel and glass, distinct from the surrounding green of the Bois de Boulogne. The stadium hosts the French Open, one of the four major tennis championships. In nineteen twenty-seven, France won the Davis Cup, prompting the country to build a venue to defend the title. They named it for Roland Garros, a pioneering aviator and fighter pilot who died in the First World War, though he never played tennis.
