The Pont de Grenelle is marked by the copper Statue of Liberty standing on the Île aux Cygnes in the middle of the Seine. This bridge connects the fifteenth and sixteenth arrondissements, but its real purpose was to provide a foundation for the railway viaduct that once ran above it. In eighteen eighty-nine, the French community in America donated this smaller version of the statue to Paris. It faces west, directly toward its massive sister in New York Harbor, turning its back on the Eiffel Tower.
