The Champ de Mars stretches out as a long, flat rectangle of green lawn anchored by the Eiffel Tower at one end and the École Militaire at the other. It originally served as a parade ground for the military school cadets who trained here in the eighteenth century. During the French Revolution, the site hosted the Festival of the Federation, where citizens gathered to celebrate the new constitution. The space later held several world fairs, leaving behind the iron tower that dominates the view.
