The iron gates open onto a private park hidden behind the tall stone walls of the rue Berryer. Adèle von Rothschild bought this mansion in eighteen seventy-eight to house her massive collection of eighteenth-century art and furniture. She turned the grounds into a private botanical retreat, far from the noise of the city. After she died in nineteen twenty-two, she bequeathed the entire estate to the French state, and it became a quiet center for the national fine arts administration.
