Jardin Carré-de-Baudouin

A high stone wall separates the Jardin Carré-de-Baudouin from the busy Rue de Ménilmontant. Inside the garden, a row of ancient linden trees frames a wide, paved central path. This plot of land occupies the site of the former Hospice Debrousse, a seventeenth-century orphanage that sheltered abandoned children. After the hospice moved in the nineteen thirties, the city leveled the buildings. Today, local residents grow vegetables in shared plots near the original stone boundary that once held the orphanage in place.
