Lavoir Moderne Parisien

The Lavoir Moderne Parisien features a bright, crimson facade that stands out against the gray stone buildings of the Goutte d'Or. This space began its life in the nineteenth century as a public washhouse where residents gathered to scrub their laundry in communal basins. After the building stopped serving that purpose, it became a theater. During the late eighties, the artist Hilmar stood on its stage and challenged the audience to reconsider how a neighborhood building could host avant-garde performances.
