Saint-Jean de Montmartre

Saint-Jean de Montmartre wears a facade of red brick and glazed ceramic tiles that set it apart from the limestone buildings surrounding it. When the architect Anatole de Baudot designed this church in eighteen ninety-four, he used reinforced concrete, a material architects usually hid behind stone. He poured a skeletal frame and filled it with brick, making this one of the first churches in the world built this way. A local priest once kept a heavy lead pipe nearby to fend off critics.
