Saint-Vincent Cemetery

The Saint-Vincent Cemetery clings to the steep northern slope of the Montmartre hill, distinguished by a limestone wall that holds back the earth and the weight of its residents. It opened in eighteen thirty-one to replace the overflowing churchyards of the village. The painter Maurice Utrillo rests here under a plain slab, buried alongside his mother, Suzanne Valadon. Valadon spent her life as a model for Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec before picking up a brush herself, and she remains in this quiet corner.
