The Jardin du Rosaire clings to the steep hillside of Fourvière, defined by a narrow, winding path that drops through dense foliage from the basilica toward the old city below. This garden follows the route of the original pilgrimage trail, where devotees once stopped at five small shrines to recite the rosary. In eighteen ninety-three, the archdiocese enclosed the area to prevent the construction of a funicular railway, keeping the slope quiet and green for those walking between the cathedral and the streets of Lyon.
