Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière

The Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière sits embedded into the hillside, constructed almost entirely of raw, bush-hammered concrete. Architect Bernard Zehrfuss buried the building to preserve the view of the ancient theater right next door. Inside, the floors slope downward in a continuous spiral, mimicking the shape of a shell. Visitors walk past a massive, intact mosaic of circus games, following a path that winds through twenty centuries of history without ever using a staircase.
