Montée de la Grande Côte

The Montée de la Grande Côte is a steep, cobblestone pedestrian street connecting the lower Presqu’île district to the Croix-Rousse plateau. It served as the primary artery for silk weavers in the nineteenth century to move their heavy goods down to the merchants below. During the French Revolution in seventeen ninety-three, this slope saw brutal fighting when local insurgents clashed with forces loyal to the National Convention. Today, the street retains its narrow, rugged character, rising sharply through the heart of the city.
