Célestins, Théâtre de Lyon

The Théâtre des Célestins is defined by the massive, curved facade of white stone facing the Place des Célestins, topped by an ornate pediment. This site has hosted performers since seventeen ninety-two, occupying the shell of a former convent. In eighteen eighty, a fire gutted the interior, leaving only the exterior walls standing. During the reconstruction, workers discovered the remains of the monks who had lived there, along with the foundation of an older chapel, all layered beneath the theater stage.
