Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste anchors the Old Town with a facade dominated by three massive, recessed portals filled with hundreds of small stone medallions. Construction dragged on for three centuries, beginning in the late twelfth century, leaving a mix of Romanesque strength and Gothic detail. During the French Revolution, a mob broke in, intent on destroying the carvings. They stopped when they reached the figure of a woman holding a child, assuming it was a portrait of a local woman they knew well.
