Théâtre Gallo Romain

The Théâtre Gallo Romain of Lyon sits carved directly into the hillside of Fourvière, characterized by its wide, stone semicircular seating area that opens toward the horizon. Built during the reign of Augustus around fifteen before the common era, it served the people of Lugdunum as a center for public performance and administrative gatherings. Emperor Hadrian later expanded it to accommodate nearly ten thousand spectators. Its tiers of stone blocks remain, still holding the shape of the original Roman design despite the centuries.
