Montée du Gourguillon

The Montée du Gourguillon is a steep, narrow stone staircase rising sharply between high, windowless walls that date back to the late Middle Ages. It links the Saint-Georges riverfront to the heights of Fourvière. In fifteen ninety-five, Henri the Fourth marched up these very cobbles to reach the cathedral, though his horse famously struggled with the incline. Residents still point to the iron rings embedded in the old masonry, once used to tether weary horses during the long climb to the top.
