The Maison du Chamarier features a distinctive octagonal turret that houses a spiral stone staircase rising above the courtyard. Built in the late fifteenth century for the official who managed the finances of the Archbishop of Lyon, the house served as a lavish residence for high-ranking clergy. In seventeen eighty-three, the famed occultist Alessandro Cagliostro lived here for several months. He claimed to practice alchemy in the cellar, drawing crowds who hoped to witness him turn base metals into gold.
