Café Gundel

The Gundel bakery and cafe sits under a striking copper-green facade on the main street of Heidelberg's old town. For over a century, the Gundel family ran this shop as a traditional confectionery, famous for their chocolate sculptures and student pastries. In the nineteen-eighties, a local customer reportedly left a sizeable inheritance to the bakery in his will, specifically to ensure the staff could keep producing his favorite treats. That unusual gift kept the ovens running long after others closed their doors.
