Herkulesbrunnen, Heidelberg - Johann Martin Laub (1706)

The Hercules Fountain features a sandstone column topped by a statue of the hero wrestling the Nemean lion. Sculptor Johann Martin Laub carved the figure in seventeen oh six to celebrate the city’s reconstruction after French troops burned Heidelberg to the ground. For decades, the basin provided the primary water source for residents in the market square. When the fountain was moved to its current spot, workers discovered a lead pipe system dating back to the late seventeenth century buried beneath the cobblestones.
