Studentenkarzer

The Studentenkarzer in Heidelberg features walls covered in colorful graffiti, portraits, and verses painted by students who were imprisoned there between seventeen seventy-eight and nineteen fourteen. University authorities used this jail to discipline students for public drunkenness, breaking the nightly curfew, or dueling. Once locked inside for days or weeks, students left their mark by painting their names and fraternity crests on the walls. It remains one of the few places where the day-to-day rebellion of nineteenth-century student life survives.
