Karlstor

The Karlstor features a massive, weathered sandstone archway that anchors the eastern end of the main street. Prince Elector Karl Theodor commissioned this gate in seventeen seventy-five to celebrate the completion of the road leading to his residence. It served as a formal entrance for travelers arriving from the east. When the Elector’s architect, Nicolas de Pigage, designed the structure, he included a prominent royal crest and inscription that still greets anyone passing beneath the heavy, arched vault today.
