Kornmarkt

The Kornmarkt sits as a paved square dominated by the tall, stone figure of the Madonna on a pedestal. Built in seventeen eighteen, the statue reflects the efforts of the Jesuits to reassert Catholicism in a city that had spent decades as a Protestant stronghold. The Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm ordered the monument to stand here to define the city center. It served as a grain market for centuries, though today it marks the start of the path toward the castle ruins above.
