Providenzkirche Heidelberg

The Providenzkirche stands out with its sober, gray facade and the solitary, modest tower rising above the bustling Hauptstrasse. Built in the seventeen fifties, it served the growing community of Reformed Protestants in Heidelberg. Johann Jakob Rischer designed the structure to provide a permanent home for a congregation that previously lacked a fixed space. When Elector Karl Theodor laid the foundation stone, he intended it to provide a sense of stability for the city after decades of religious upheaval and constant military conflict.
