Rathaus

The Heidelberg Rathaus dominates the market square with a sandstone facade that stretches wide across the cobblestones. This town hall stands on the site of buildings destroyed during the War of the Grand Alliance in the late seventeenth century. When the town council decided to rebuild, they insisted on a structure that projected strength and continuity. Architecturally, it serves as the administrative heart of the city, housing the mayor’s office and local government chambers inside a design defined by classic baroque symmetry.
