The Elizabeth Gate at the entrance to the Heidelberg Castle gardens features a weathered, neoclassical archway made of red sandstone. Friedrich the Fifth commissioned this gate in sixteen fifteen as a surprise birthday present for his wife, Elizabeth Stuart. Legend says the king ordered his masons to build the entire structure in a single night. While the quick turnaround remains a local tale, the gate stands today as a tangible mark of the couple's time here before their reign in Bohemia.
