Bautzner Tor

The Bautzner Tor stands as a lone, heavy stone archway marking where the old city walls once met the road toward Bautzen. When Dresden expanded in the eighteenth century, the medieval fortifications came down, but this gate remained. It bears the royal coat of arms of the Elector of Saxony, carved right into the masonry. During the final months of the second world war, the structure suffered significant damage, yet the arch survived, preserved as a fragment of the city's former perimeter.
