Königstraße

Königstraße remains the most complete baroque streetscape in Dresden. While firestorms leveled much of the city in nineteen forty-five, this stretch of elegant residential buildings survived largely intact. The street features uniform facades, steep mansard roofs, and sandstone carvings commissioned by Augustus the Strong to transform the neighborhood into a noble district. During the eighteenth century, high-ranking officials and wealthy merchants lived behind these doors. Today, the courtyards hold boutique shops and galleries, tucked away from the noise of the main thoroughfares.
