Palaisgarten

The Palaisgarten holds a pair of stone sphinxes that face the Elbe River, remnants of a much grander garden design from the eighteenth century. When Augustus the Strong commissioned the Japanese Palace nearby, he demanded grounds that matched his ambition, filling this space with ornate fountains and rows of carefully pruned trees. Today, the garden retains its rigid symmetry, though the original sculptures have long since vanished into museums or history, leaving the sphinxes as quiet sentinels of a lost royal landscape.
