Holy Catholic Cathedral of Saint Denis the Areopagite

The Cathedral of Saint Denis the Areopagite features a pale, neo-Renaissance facade topped by a tall, arched triangular pediment. Built in the mid-nineteenth century, this church serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop in Athens. King Otto of Greece donated the land to the Catholic community in eighteen forty-seven. When the architect Leo von Klenze drafted the original plans, he drew heavy inspiration from Saint Boniface’s Abbey in Munich, grounding this Athenian landmark in the formal traditions of German ecclesiastical architecture.
