The Church of the Holy Trinity, or Soteira Lykodemos, stands out for its massive, prominent dome, the largest medieval structure remaining in Athens. Built in the eleventh century, the church once served as the catholicon for a large monastery. In eighteen forty-seven, the Russian Tsar Alexander the Second purchased the dilapidated building to save it from demolition. Since that time, the site has functioned as the official church for the Russian community living in the city.
