The chapel of Saint Demetrios Loumbardiaris sits tucked into the pine woods on the slopes of Philopappos Hill, built from simple, rough-hewn stone and salvaged ancient marble fragments. Its name comes from a seventeenth-century legend about an Ottoman commander who planned to bombard the Parthenon from here with a large cannon, known as a loumbarda. A sudden lightning strike reportedly blew up the powder magazine and killed the commander, leaving the chapel standing as the savior of the Acropolis.
