The Academy of Athens displays two massive lonic columns topped by seated marble statues of Athena and Apollo. Designed by Theophil Hansen, this neoclassical building serves as the national academy of science and literature. Construction began in eighteen fifty-nine, funded by the wealthy Greek diplomat Simon Sinas. He insisted the project follow the precise proportions of ancient Athenian architecture. The project faced frequent delays due to constant arguments between the architect and local committees regarding the choice of stone and the expensive sculptural details.
