Choragic Monument of Lysicrates

The Choragic Monument of Lysicrates stands as a cylindrical stone tower crowned with a marble roof, tucked into a neighborhood of much newer buildings. In three hundred thirty-four before Christ, a wealthy man named Lysicrates financed a winning theatrical performance at the nearby Theater of Dionysus. To commemorate the victory, he commissioned this stone pedestal to display the bronze tripod trophy he received from the judges. It is the earliest known use of the Corinthian order on the exterior of a building.
