The Philopappos Monument stands as a weathered marble tomb on the highest point of Mouseion Hill. It honors Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos, a prince from the kingdom of Commagene who became an Athenian citizen in the second century. When Philopappos died, his sister built this structure to commemorate his status in the city. The curved facade once held statues of his royal ancestors alongside his own, overlooking the theater of Dionysus where he had served as a generous benefactor.
