The Kimoneia (Kimon's Tombs)

historic

The Kimoneia consists of a series of stone base platforms sitting near the Dipylon Gate, marking the family burial plot of the Athenian general Kimon. While these low foundations appear modest now, they once supported elaborate grave markers carved with images of horses and riders to honor the Miltiades clan. Kimon spent his personal wealth decorating Athens, yet he died on a military campaign in Cyprus. His relatives brought his bones back to this specific spot to rest among his ancestors.
