Bathhouse of the Winds (Museum of Modern Greek Culture)

The Bathhouse of the Winds is the only public bath from the Ottoman period that survives in Athens. It features an octagonal stone dome and a low, unassuming profile that kept the interior heat trapped during the winter. By the mid-eighteenth century, the Abid Effendi family ran the establishment, serving the daily washing needs of the neighborhood. A heated marble floor once supported a constant flow of customers who came here to scrub away the dust of the city until it finally closed in nineteen sixty-five.
