Benizelos Mansion

historic

The Benizelos Mansion stands out with its heavy, wooden door and the distinct overhanging timber balcony that wraps around the upper floor. This is the oldest surviving house in Athens, dating back to the sixteenth century. It once belonged to the family of Saint Philothei, a noblewoman who used her wealth to ransom prisoners and establish a convent. The house survived centuries of Ottoman rule and remains as the rare evidence of how the Athenian aristocracy lived during that time.
