Old Madrasa Gate

The Old Madrasa Gate stands as a heavy, weathered stone archway tucked into a modern streetscape. It served as the entrance to a seventeenth-century Ottoman theological school. When the Greek War of Independence began in eighteen twenty-one, the building became a prison. Prisoners carved names and small drawings into the gate’s stone pillars, marks that remain visible today. After the building was demolished in the early twentieth century, this gateway stayed behind, disconnected from the walls that once supported it.
