Museum of Modern Greek Culture (Tzistarakis Mosque)

The Tzistarakis Mosque features a distinct, rounded dome that rises above the stone walls of Monastiraki Square. Built in seventeen fifty-nine, it served as the primary place of worship for the Ottoman governor, Mustapha Agha Tzistarakis. Legend says he destroyed an ancient column from the nearby Temple of Olympian Zeus to harvest lime for the construction. The local population believed this act unleashed a plague upon the city, eventually leading to the governor’s forced removal by his superiors in the Ottoman administration.
