Prison of Socrates

Three carved chambers sit cut directly into the vertical face of the Hill of Philopappos. These rooms lack doors and roofs, exposing their bare rock walls to the open air. While local tradition names this the Prison of Socrates, archaeological evidence connects the structure to the mid-nineteenth century, when the chambers served as storage for nearby construction projects. During the nineteen forties, the caverns housed antiquities hidden away to protect them from the invading forces occupying the city.
