National Observatory of Athens - Thissio Visitor Center

The Sina building sits atop the Hill of Nymphs, topped by a distinctive, dark dome that rotates to track the stars. Designed by Theophil Hansen in eighteen forty-two, this neoclassical structure serves as Greece’s first research institution. Baron Georgios Sinas funded the project, hoping to establish Athens as a center for scientific advancement. During the liberation struggle, soldiers once mistook the telescope for a strange weapon, fearing its long barrel aimed at the city below. It remains a fixture of the skyline.
